"Let’s go out back and I’ll beat your ass": Florida judge allegedly attacks lawyer outside courtroom

A Florida judge allegedly punched a public defender after the two stepped outside the courtroom to settle a beef.

The brawl erupted after Judge John Murphy began to argue with the lawyer, Andrew Weinstock, in a Brevard County courtroom just outside of Orlando on Monday.

“You know, if I had a rock, I would throw it at you right now,” Murphy is heard telling the attorney in a video recording of the spat, which aired on WFTV.

“Stop p---ing me off. Just sit down.”

But Weinstock — who felt he was being pressured to talk his client into waiving his right to a speedy trial — barked back at the angry judge.

“You know I’m the public defender,” Weinstock said. “I have the right to be here and I have a right to stand and represent my client.”

That’s when Murphy asked the lawyer if he wanted to settle the matter with their fists.

“If you want to fight, let’s go out back and I’ll just beat your ass,” he told Weinstock.
The lawyer can be seen in the video apparently following Murphy out of the courtroom before the sounds of a scuffle can be heard off camera.

The attorney said that immediately upon entering the hallway, he was grabbed by the collar and began to be struck,” Blaise Trettis, public defender of the 18th Judicial Court, told WFTV.

“There was no discussion, no talk, not even time for anything. Just as soon as they’re in the hallway, the attorney was grabbed.”

Murphy punched Weinstock in the face before a pair of deputies broke up the fight. The lawyer was reassigned to another area to avoid another confrontation.

He later declined to press charges. But legal experts said the two men could still face disciplinary action.

One witness told WKMG-TV that the argument escalated because Weinstock acted "exteremely rude."

People inside the courtroom applauded the judge as he returned to the bench.

“I will catch my breath eventually,” Murphy told the courtroom. “Man, I’m an old man.”
