Vatican picks over Irish paedophile priest scandal

As the Roman Catholic Church prepares to celebrate the penitential rites of Lent, during which the faithful beg forgiveness for their sins, an unprecedented act of private penance has been held behind closed doors at the Vatican. Pope Benedict spent two days in one of the Vatican's sumptuous marble audience halls closeted with 24 Irish bishops who both individually and collectively confessed to him their shortcomings and omissions in the paedophile clergy scandal which has shocked the entire Catholic world. Cardinal Sean Brady, the Catholic primate of all Ireland, who led the delegation of bishops, said afterwards that "at this time of penance, we must begin with ourselves". None of the bishops addressed the substance of the Vatican meeting at a hastily convened news conference at the offices of Vatican Radio. The proceedings were - like most Vatican business - conducted in total secrecy, but we know from the official Vatican communique issued at the end of this extraordinary crisis meeting that the Pope strongly condemned the child abuse scandal which has been the subject of an official Irish government inquiry, the Murphy report.

Obama creates budget deficit taskforce

Obama has set up a taskforce to tackle the growing US budget deficit. The body will report back by the end of the year on what steps need to be taken to get the deficit down to 3% of GDP. This year's deficit is expected to climb to 10.6% of GDP, to hit a record $1.56 trillion. Last year it reached 9.9%, the highest rate since World War II.

US warns Iran of nuclear consequences

The White House has again warned Iran that it faces consequences if it fails to meet international responsibilities about its nuclear program. The continuing pressure follows a report from the IAEA, the UN nuclear watchdog, that said Iran may currently be working on nuclear weapons. US officials said that while report showed Iran had technical difficulties, its IAEA co-operation was declining. Iran has always maintained that its nuclear program is peaceful. The US and other Western nations fear it is enriching uranium for nuclear weapons. The US is keen for the UN Security Council to impose a fourth round of sanctions on Iran.

Reversing decision, Toyota chief will travel to Washington to testify

Toyota's global president has said he will testify to US politicians next week about the carmaker's giant global recall program. Akio Toyoda said he was looking "forward to speaking directly with Congress and the American people". He had previously indicated he would not travel to Washington, instead wishing to lead the recall from Japan. Toyoda is now due to appear before a congressional committee on Wednesday of next week.

Cluster munitions treaty to take effect August 1 after 30 countries ratify

The UN announced on Tuesday that the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) will enter into force on August 1 after being ratified by 30 countries. Burkina Faso and Moldova both submitted their instruments of ratification Tuesday, becoming the 29th and 30th countries to do so. In a statement, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that "the Convention's entry into force just two years after its adoption demonstrates the world's collective revulsion at the impact of these terrible weapons." Several major users of cluster munitions, including the US, Russia, China, Israel, India, and Pakistan, have not adopted the convention, arguing that cluster bombs serve legitimate military purposes. Ban urged "all States to become a party to the Convention without delay."

China anger at Dalai Lama visit

Obama's talks with the Dalai Lama in Washington have "seriously undermined" US-China relations, Beijing says. China had earlier expressed "strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition" to the meeting with a man they see as a separatist. It said the US should "take effective steps to eradicate the malign effects". Washington had kept the Dalai Lama's meeting low-key to emphasis it was private rather than political.

How to write compelling copy by breaking the rules

by Tom Trush

Could you use a little extra confidence when it comes to writing?

Time and again, people tell me they can't write, especially when creating their marketing materials.

But often all they're doing is over-thinking the process.

I believe responsibility for this problem rests with someone who had an early effect on your writing mindset.

Your first English teacher.

Don't get me wrong -- English teachers are wonderful people. In fact, my mom is a retired English teacher.

For 30 years, she grilled 7th and 8th graders on grammar, spelling and punctuation. Then, she brought those lessons home to my twin brother and me, and made sure they were permanently placed in our brains.

When I began writing copy, one of my biggest challenges was learning how to ignore writing "rules." That's because effective copy has less to do with proper grammar and sentence structure than you might think.

The key to crafting words that sell is writing the way you speak.

In daily conversations, you likely use short sentences, small words and sentence fragments. It's no wonder using this same style when writing makes your message easier to understand.

Unfortunately, lots of lawyers believe expertise is conveyed through lengthy words, elaborate adjectives and professional jargon. But all this approach does is intimidate your prospects and make your writing unpleasant to read.

Prospects must relate to what you're saying if you want them to take your desired action.

When writing for promotional purposes ...

  • Don't be afraid to start a sentence with "and" or "but."

  • Use sentence fragments to give thoughts greater emphasis.

  • Don't avoid one-sentence paragraphs.

  • Use contractions to create a more casual feel.

  • Don't rely too much on your thesaurus.

Also, I'm a big fan of using an ellipsis (...) at the end of a phrase. Subconsciously, your mind often convinces you to keep reading when you see an ellipsis because it's a signal for an unfinished thought.

NOTE: When deciding whether to use these suggestions, always first consider your readers. As a general rule, match your writing to the conversational tone you would use when speaking in front of the audience you're targeting.

Military coup ousts Niger leader

Coup plotters in Niger seize the president after a gun battle in the capital, Niamey, and suspend the country's constitution.

Microsoft-Yahoo search deal approved

Microsoft's plans to buy Yahoo's internet search and search advertising businesses have been cleared by both European and US regulators. The European Commission ruled that the deal "would not significantly impede effective competition". Under the deal, Yahoo's website will use Microsoft's Bing search engine, and the two firms will share the revenues. Microsoft is seeking to increase its share of the search engine industry, which is dominated by Google.

Australia tells Japan: Stop whaling or face court

Australia has set a deadline for Japan to stop whaling in the Southern Ocean by November this year, or face international legal action. Despite a 1986 international moratorium on commercial whaling, Japan kills hundreds of whales each year, ostensibly for scientific research.

Interpol puts Dubai killing suspects on wanted list

The 11 people suspected of killing a Hamas commander in Dubai have been placed on international police organization Interpol's wanted list. Interpol has posted the photographs and names it suspects were used fraudulently by the individuals. Dubai's police chief says he is 99% sure Israeli secret service agents were involved in Mahmoud al-Mabhouh's death, but Israel says there is no proof. The UK has expressed "outrage" that six British passports were used.

Gordon Brown says UK is prepared in Falkland Islands

The UK has made "all the preparations that are necessary" to protect the Falkland Islands, Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said. However, the Ministry of Defence has denied reports that a naval taskforce is on its way to the Falklands. Argentina has brought in controls on ships passing through its waters to the islands over UK plans to drill for oil. Shadow foreign secretary William Hague said the Royal Navy's presence in the region should be increased. Geologists say the seabed around the Falklands has substantial oil reserves.

US agency to investigate Blackberry and iPhone makers

The US International Trade Commission (ITC) has said it will investigate the makers of the iPhone and Blackberry, over technology used in their handsets. The case was prompted by a complaint by camera firm Kodak against Apple and Research In Motion, the makers of the smartphones. Kodak alleges the iPhone and Blackberry use technology for previewing pictures that infringe Kodak patents. Kodak has asked the ITC to bar both firms from shipping the phones. The camera firm said in January, when it filed the complaint with the ITC, that it had been in talks with both firms "for years" to try to resolve the matter "amicably".

Google books deal heads to New York court

Search giant Google is facing its opponents in a New York court over long-delayed plans to create the world's largest online library. The fairness hearing has been set up to listen to arguments for and against a controversial deal between Google and US authors and publishers. Critics say the pact would hand the search giant a monopoly over online books sales. Some 26 interested parties will be given time to outline any objections. "This case is the key showdown. It's high-noon time in front of a judge," said John Simpson of Consumer Watchdog, one of the groups that objects to the settlement. "I do think all the books in the world should be digitized but I think it is completely wrong to give one huge company control of that huge database and this is a very, very important matter," Simpson said.

Bolivian President Evo Morales appoints 18 top judges

Bolivian President Evo Morales has appointed 18 top judges, including Supreme Court justices, ahead of December judicial elections. The temporary measure has prompted accusations from his opponents that the independence of the justice system is being threatened. Morales denies any such attack, saying the justices are independent and not known to him personally.

France wine producers guilty of US scandal

A dozen French winemakers and traders have been found guilty of a massive scam to sell 18 million bottles of fake Pinot Noir to a leading US buyer. The judge in Carcassonne, south-west France, said the producers and traders had severely damaged the reputation of the Langedoc region. The 12 more than doubled profits passing off the wine to E and J Gallo under its Red Bicyclette brand. The court ruled the 12 had deliberately and repeatedly mislabelled the wine as one of the more expensive varieties of grape in order to get a better price from E and J Gallo. French Customs officers spotted the swindle and called in investigators. They found the amount of Pinot Noir being sold to Gallo was far more than the region produced. E and J Gallo was not involved in the court case.

Alcatel agrees to pay $137 million to avoid U.S. prosecution for bribery

Alcatel-Lucent SA agreed to pay $137.4 million and make internal reforms to avoid U.S. prosecution for alleged bribes paid in Costa Rica, Taiwan and Kenya, according to a company regulatory filing.

Local gun-control laws come into sights of U.S. Supreme Court

For gun-control advocates, defeat may be inevitable in the Chicago handgun-ban case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The question is whether they will get a consolation prize. The central issue in the case, set for argument March 2, is whether the Constitution's Second Amendment applies to state and local gun laws, in addition to those enacted by the federal government and District of Columbia. When the court in 2008 struck down D.C.'s handgun ban and declared that the Second Amendment protects individual rights, the five justices in the majority suggested the court eventually would bind states and cities. How the court takes that step, known as "incorporation," may prove as important as if it does so. Some gun-control groups are effectively conceding incorporation, instead asking the court to say that states and cities can still enact "reasonable" regulations. That might leave intact sales restrictions and bans on concealed weapons and particular types of guns.

France high court remands terrorism case against former Guantanamo detainees

The French Court of Cassation on Wednesday reversed an appellate court decision to overturn the convictions of five former Guantanamo Bay detainees, remanding the case to the lower court. A court spokesperson said the case will be heard by a specially created panel of the Paris appeals court. Regardless of the outcome, it is unlikely the men will serve any additional time in prison. A lawyer for two of the defendants expressed disappointment in the court's decision.

Israeli Hezbollah rocket victims sue Iran in US court

Eighty-five victims of rocket attacks in Israel have filed a lawsuit in the US District Court for the District of Columbia seeking damages from Iran and Iran's central bank for for injuries suffered in the 2006 Second Lebanon War. The suit, filed Monday, claims that Iran, between 2001 and 2006, gave Hezbollah more than $50 million "with the specific intent and purpose of facilitating, enabling and causing Hezbollah to carry out terrorist attacks against American and Israeli targets in order to advance Iran's Policy and Goals" of undermining the US and abolishing Israel. Specifically, the plaintiffs allege that Iran's funding allowed Hezbollah to carry out a rocket barrage in July and August 2006 during a conflict with Israel. The plaintiffs are US, Canadian, and Israeli citizens who were injured or represent those killed in the attacks. The suit seeks $1 billion in compensatory damages and an unspecified amount in punitive damages.

Number of journalists killed worldwide reaches record high in 2009

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) issued its annual report on Tuesday confirming the work-related killings of more than 70 journalists worldwide during 2009, the highest in the 30-year history of the CPJ. Of the 71 confirmed killings identified in the report, 51 are believed to be murders, with several others still under investigation.

Egypt state court system bars female judges

Egypt's State Council (Maglis id-Dowla) association, an administrative court system with jurisdiction over cases involving the state, voted Monday to bar the appointment of female judges to the council. Of the 376 judges who participated in the vote, 334 supported the bar against female appointments and 42 rejected it. Despite the overwhelming support the ban received, some are disappointed in the outcome of the vote, as it demonstrates a deep opposition to the government's campaign to eliminate gender discrimination in the judiciary. The decision could still be overruled by the Special Council, the body that oversees the State Council.

Karadzic claims documents evidence weapons smuggling to Bosnian Muslims

Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic on Monday appeared before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) claiming that documents he seeks from former UN peacekeeper countries would provide evidence of arms smuggling to Bosnian Muslims during the 1992-1995 Bosnian conflict. Only Germany, France, and Croatia entered appearances at the hearing to contest the documents' disclosure. Karadzic alleges that peacekeeping countries supplied arms or were involved in the conflict providing support to Bosnian Muslims, prolonging the conflict and causing Bosnian Serbs to act in self-defense. According to an ICTY spokesperson, Monday's hearing was the last pre-trial hearing, and the trial is scheduled to resume on March 1.
