Drink spiking incident

Tourist arrested in Nelson after drink spiking

A 29-year-old Swedish tourist has been arrested in connection with a drink spiking incident at a Napier bar which saw four people hospitalised at the weekend.

The man was arrested in Nelson on charges of indecent assault and administering a Class B controlled drug, police said.

He was due to appear in Nelson District Court today and police would be seeking a remand to Napier District Court.

Police were called to the Cri Bar in central Napier on Saturday night after four of the patrons began collapsing, convulsing, dry-retching and vomiting.

Three men, aged 20, 23 and 44, and one woman, 19, were admitted to hospital about 2am on Sunday. They were all released on Sunday night.

Senior Sergeant Nick Reid said the mass spiking was a rare incident but served as a reminder for people to not leave drinks unattended.
