Julian Assange lands guest spot on The Simpsons

Controversial WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will make a guest appearance on The Simpsons, a representative for the hit animation said today.

Australian-born Assange will befriend Homer and Marge Simpson when the pair are kicked out of their native Springfield.

The couple retreat to a "very rugged place" where they live next door to the 40-year-old, the show's producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly.

Assange, who is currently fighting extradition from the UK to Sweden on allegations of sexual assault, lent his voice to the animated comedy as part of its 500th episode. He is the latest in a long line of famous faces to feature on the FOX show.

The internet activist recorded his lines while under house arrest in the UK and Jean directed him over the phone.

"There's nothing we did that has anything to do with the legal situation that (Assange) is in ... We wanted to make sure it was satirical, and he was willing to do that," Jean explained.

The 500th episode of the comedy, created by Matt Groening, will air in the US on February 19.
