US warns it may 'push BP aside' on Gulf oil clean-up

Oil firm BP may be "pushed out of the way" if it fails to perform in the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster clean-up, a top US official has warned. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said the British company had missed "deadline after deadline" in its efforts to seal a blown-out oil well. The spill has reached Louisiana and is threatening Florida and Cuba. Obama is now calling the situation a disaster. Although it is within the government's power to push BP aside, our correspondent says BP is the only organization with the knowledge to deal with a situation like this at such a depth. Washington is coming under increasing criticism for its response to the disaster, as well as pressure to assume control from BP.But he said BP had agreed to pay clean-up costs beyond the current US $75m liability limit.

Supreme court to rule on suspects' access to lawyer under Scottish law

The ability of police in Scotland to detain suspects without giving them access to a lawyer is a breach of human rights, lawyers will argue tomorrow, in one of the most significant challenges in recent times to criminal procedure in the UK. The supreme court will examine Scottish criminal law, which gives police up to six hours after arrest to question suspects without a legal representative. Critics say the rule – which leaves Scotland as one of only five countries in Europe that do not allow immediate access to a lawyer – is a violation of the right to a fair trial.

BP refusing to follow EPA dispersant directive

BP is balking at an US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) order issued Thursday directing it to find an alternative dispersant to address the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The agency Saturday released BP's response to the directive ordering the oil company to find a "less toxic and more effective dispersant" to combat the spill within 24 hours and begin using it within 72. Dispersants are chemicals that are used to break oil down into small droplets causing it to become more easily degradable.

British Airways cabin crew begin five-day strike action

British Airways cabin crew have begun a five-day strike, in a resumption of industrial action in their long-running dispute over jobs and pay. The Unite union is also demanding the restoration of travel concessions to staff who took part in the last series of stoppages in March. The airline said it was disappointed Unite had resorted to "negotiation through the media".

Kurdish children jailed in Turkey under anti-terror law

More than 340 children in the Kurdish south-east of Turkey have been given long prison sentences in the past three years. Most of them were detained for taking part in anti-government protests, under a law banning any show of support for the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party, or PKK. The government says it knows the law, which requires a minimum five-year sentence, is too harsh, but it has yet to change it.

Brazil environment officials arrested for logging

Illegal logging is big business in the Amazon. Police in Brazil have arrested at least 70 people suspected of illegal logging in the Amazon - including officials employed to protect the rainforest. Several environmental officials in Mato Grosso state are accused of providing false licences for the extraction of timber from protected areas. Loggers, landowners and forest managers have also been charged.

The perils of global legalism

The debate about America increasingly supporting an adherence to international law highlights a position that many believe is both ethically necessary and in the nation's best interests. But detractors contend that such views demonstrate a dangerously naïve tendency toward legalism—a belief that law can be effective even in the absence of legitimate institutions of governance.
