Courtney Love sued for defamation

In the past, rocker Courtney Love has gotten away with her Twitter rants about Brittney Spears, actor Edward Norton and other Hollywood foes, but her posts about clothing designer Dawn Simorangkir have led to a defamation lawsuit, the Hollywood Reporter reported Wednesday.

Love sent Twitter messages on March 14, 2009, disparaging Simorangkir as a "drug-pushing prostitute with a history of assault and battery" and called her a thief in reply to Simorangkir's request for money for clothes she'd loaned Love.

Simorangkir filed a lawsuit for defamation in Los Angeles.

Bryan Freedman, Simorangkir's lawyer, said his client is suing for millions in damages because Love's false statements "destroyed Simorangkir's career."

For now, Love is silent.

Her first tweet today said she was "shutting down all social media first thing, from here on in, i have no comment."

The trial is set for Jan. 18.
