Brazil: Officials debate scandal inquiry
Brazilian lawmakers said Wednesday they were still determining the legality of a scheduled federal investigation into an alleged bribery scandal.
The President of the Senate, Sen. Renan Calheiros, said he would meet next week with fellow officials on Brazil's constitutional judicial committee to determine whether the investigation will go ahead.
Last month, Brazilian TV showed a video of a high-ranking postal official accepting a large amount of cash. The alleged bribery scheme was linked to a party allied with Brazil's ruling Workers' Party, or PT.
Opposition parties led the call for an investigation, a move PT officials said was politically motivated ahead of next year's presidential elections.
