Alun Milford, general counsel at the UK'S Serious Fraud Office, is to leave the anti-fraude agency become a partner ar the law firm Kingsley Napley.
Mr Milford joined the SFO in 2012 when David Green QC appointed its director. He is thought to have applied to succeed Mr Green - and was at one point considered the leading candidate - but in the end lost out to Lisa Osofsky, who became the organisation head a few weeks ago.
This is the most recent of several moves by senior SFO staff members into more luvrative work private practice. This month, for example, the law firm Slaughter and May announced that Mr Green would be joining as a senior cibsultant, while John Gibson, whose roles included being case controller for the SFO's investigation into the mining group ENRC, has left to join US outfit Cohen 7 Gresser and launch its UK white-collar crime division.
Mr Milford said on Monday: "It has been privilege to serve as the SFO's general counsel and I have very much enjoyed the variety and challenge of the work. But after six years, the times is right for me to move on."
Mr Ososfsky thanked him for his "excellent legal analysis and passionate commitment to the office".
