Wall St opens higher on profit optimism

Stocks rose at the open on Tuesday, as investors speculated the earnings season could get off to a strong start when bellwether Alcoa Inc reports third-quarter results later in the day.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 33.41 points, or 0.24 percent, at 14,077.14. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX: Quote, Profile, Research) was up 3.43 points, or 0.22 percent, at 1,556.01. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 6.16 points, or 0.22 percent, at 2,793.53.
